On Jan. 12, Dr. Alan Sams, Executive Vice President and Provost for Texas A&M, shared the charge for Dr. Jack Baldauf, Vice President for Research, and R. Ethan Braden, Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, to create a plan to establish and elevate Texas A&M’s research identity in response to last fall’s State of the University address by Texas A&M President Mark A. Welsh III.

In following this charge, the committee was formed to include faculty, staff and student representatives from across the university, including remote and branch campuses, and the Texas A&M System, meeting weekly since Feb. 6. The committee includes representation from Undergraduate Research; the Graduate and Professional School; Postdoctoral Scholars; University Research Council; Council of Deans; Council of Principal Investigators (CPI); Faculty Senate Research Committee; the Texas A&M System; Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station; Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service; Texas A&M AgriLife; Texas A&M University at Galveston; Texas A&M-Fort Worth; Mays Business School; Office of the President; Planning, Assessment and Strategy; Community Engagement; Government Relations; and the Texas A&M Foundation.

With a focus to define the Texas A&M Research Identity and develop a process for advancing this identity throughout the state and the nation, the committee’s charge is to explore the following:

  1. What are the traits and characteristics of Texas A&M’s research enterprise?
  2. What are the strengths of the university’s identity? What makes us distinct?
  3. What does Texas A&M desire to be known for?
  4. Why should target audiences care?
  5. How does the university best communicate our research to our stakeholders?

Separate sessions with the University Research Council, Faculty Senate Research Committee, Council of Deans and Department Heads are being scheduled.
