Past Arts & Humanities Fellow receives Carnegie grant

Dr. Hyeran Jo, associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Texas A&M University’s Bush School of Government and Public Service, has received a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York for her project titled, “Small-State Statecraft & Realignment.”

The grant spans 24 months totaling $400,500 for a one-time project on small-state statecraft and realignment, which is part of a Request for Proposals on Understanding the Forces Shaping the Global Order.

A 2021 Arts & Humanities Fellow, Jo said that her time as a fellow significantly influenced her research.  “I always think about the humanitarian impact and what kind of impact the research might have on people,” she said.

In addition, Jo was honored as a 2024 Chancellor Enhancing Development and Generating Excellence in Scholarship (EDGES) Fellow for her contributions within her discipline.

Jo’s research examines global realignment patterns and trends between 1990 and 2024 and identifies which countries have become closer to China or the United States politically, economically and socially over time.

The project’s global team will detail shifts in alignment for small states (those nations other than global and regional powers) to find sources and strategies of alignment and realignment in contemporary geopolitics.
