Qualifying participants will be asked to take a lutein, zeaxanthin, fish oil supplement, or a placebo for six months. Baseline and six-month activities include a blood draw, macular pigment optical density (MPOD) measure, anthropometrics, cognitive testing, and a DXA. Participants will come monthly to pick up supplements and have MPOD, anthropometrics, and cognitive testing at three months.
Healthy males or females between 18 to 45 years old with <.43 MPOD, a self-reported best-corrected vision of 20/40 or better in each eye, a BMI of 18.5-30, and meet the inclusion criteria on a preliminary participant questionnaire can participate. Those with >.7 MPOD, selfreported best-corrected vision of 20/40 or better in each eye, and meet the inclusion criteria on the preliminary questionnaires qualify for 2 NT training sessions. Only those with <.43 MPOD and participation in the 6-month study qualify. Individuals allergic to lutein, zeaxanthin, or fish oil or take supplements with >6 mg lutein and/or >2 mg zeaxanthin for more than two months before the study starts are excluded. Those with MPOD between >.43 and <.7, self-reported conditions of vertigo, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, optic neuropathy, retinal vascular occlusions, strabismus, autoimmune disorders related to visual health, currently pregnant or trying to become pregnant, history of concussion, vegan (due to gelatin in the placebo), and/or taking neuroactive medications, such as Ritalin, Adderall, antidepressants, etc. are also excluded.
