Job Description Summary

The Research Scientist, under direction, is responsible for conducting complex independent research into their field of expertise. The Research Scientist will utilize techniques and strategies taught to them by their education and experiences to work towards solving the question presented by their research project. Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications. Oversees the preparation and cleaning of worksite. May collaborate with other researchers and/or faculty.  

Pay Grade: Commensurate

Minimum Rate: $55,844.04
Dean Approval (up to): $157,901.68

Essential Duties and Tasks

60% Research

  • Will be responsible for conducting complex independent research into their field of expertise.
  • Utilizes advanced knowledge and skills granted to them by their education and experience to complete research projects in their field of expertise. 
  • Oversees the preparation and cleaning of worksite.
  • Organizes worksite and determines what supplies are necessary to continue research in an effective manner.
  • Analyzes research data and summarizes results.
  • Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications.
  • Assists with grant acquisition.

10% Mentoring/Supervision

  • May assist student researchers, Postdoctoral Research Associates, Assistant Research Scientists, and/or Associate Research Scientists who are working on research related to the project.
  • May supervise assigned staff and/or students.

10% Presentations

  • Prepares presentation materials on research topics that may be presented to small and/or large groups.
  • Actively participates in the preparation of required technical progress reports to research sponsors.

20% Duty Title (for the department’s use)

  • Remaining Percentage Can Be Determined by Department to Meet Business Needs or Can Be Incorporated into Percentages Above.

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in a related field.
  • Six years of related experience in a specialized and relevant field of research. 

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • May vary depending on the area of research.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Presentation skills.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary collaborative team. 
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Other Requirements and Factors

  • May have to work on the weekend and/or after normal hours.
  • May travel as required.
